Arpeggios

How to Improve Flow and Speed with Arpeggios

for fluid arpeggio playing

Key Takeaways

  • Position and fingering matter for fluid arpeggio playing
  • Some positions require picking every note (less fluid)
  • Other positions allow legato (hammer-ons/pull-offs) for better flow
  • Experiment with different fingerings to find the smoothest approach

Here's a lesson on arpeggio technique. This is for intermediate players who have experience with arpeggios and want to get more fluid with their playing.

One thing I want you to take away: position and fingering really matter when it comes to playing fluid arpeggios on the guitar.

Certain positions are more challenging to play than others. Certain positions flow better.

Here's C major 7. Here's a typical way to play this arpeggio. It's fine, but it has a roadblock when I try to speed it up. To make that work, I have to pick every note. It's not quite as fluid as it could be.

Check out this position. When I speed that up, it has much more flow to it. That's because I'm using legato in this position, so I'm not picking every note.
