Guitar Finger Stretches for Better Flexibility

Build stretches into your playing rather than doing separate hand exercises

Key Takeaways

  • Build stretches into your playing rather than doing separate hand exercises
  • Higher frets have shorter distances between notes (easier to stretch)
  • Start at fret 7-10, then move down to 1-4 as you improve
  • Progressive challenge: exercises get harder as you move down the neck

The best way to develop finger stretches is by constructing exercises that involve playing the guitar. Not hand stretches, but ways of playing that will get you where you want to be.

To get the stretch from your first finger to your pinky, start at the seventh fret. Put the first finger on the seventh fret of the low E string, and put the pinky on the 10th fret.

The distance from 7 to 10 is much shorter than the distance from 1 to 4. Same number of notes, but the physical distance is shorter up high, so it's easier to play.

If that's challenging, go even higher: play 10 to 13. You're working your first finger stretching to your fourth finger.

As you go down the neck in pitch, the exercises get progressively more challenging.
