Three steps to better barre chords, and here is step two: how you use your first finger.

A lot of folks when they play a barre with the first finger will use the fleshy part of the finger, but that's not really correct. It'll work better if you use the side of the finger.

If you can imagine a seam connecting the front and back of your finger, it's that seam that you want to lay down to create the barre.

When you come to the fretboard, you might naturally go just laying the finger flat. But what you want to do is turn your wrist a little, which is going to lay you down on the side seam, and kind of nestle up to the fret wire. Then you're going to have a better sounding barre.
